What is a neuropsychologist and what does he or she do?

Neuropsychology is the study of the relationship between brain function and behavior. It examines how neurological conditions (as well as brain damage or vascular dementia) affect cognitive processes, emotions and behavior. Neuropsychologists assess and diagnose these effects through a variety of tests and evaluations, aiming to understand how changes in brain function influence mental and emotional states. Their work often involves creating tailored treatment plans to help individuals manage or recover from neurological impairments.

A neuropsychologist is a specialized psychologist who studies the relationship between brain function and behavior. They assess and diagnose cognitive and emotional impairments resulting from brain damage, neurological disorders or developmental disorders. Using a combination of clinical interviews, neuropsychological testing and observational techniques, neuropsychologists assess how these impairments affect cognitive abilities such as memory, attention, language and executive functions. They use their findings to develop and recommend treatment plans, rehabilitation strategies and interventions aimed at improving cognitive functioning and quality of life. Neuropsychologists often work in hospitals, rehabilitation centers, research settings and private practice.
